Recently I have moved away from

using found materials for my collage

- instead painting paper with colours

I feel right for the work.

At the same time I have given free

rein to these collages. They no longer

need to represent actual places or objects.

Instead te material finds its own way to a

reconciliation. The images result from

placing, moving, tearing, adding and

removing until the image is complete

on its own terms

I think these have been my

most difficult pieces. I find more

than a little empathy with Paul

Moorhouse's account of Albert

Irvins's painting:

Whereas the painter working from

an external motif can refer to that

object, an abstract painter has nothing

go by, nothing to direct his actions. His

engagement is with the developing

image only. As a result every mark is

fraught with danger - the painting could

go wrong with every addition.
