I think these have been my most difficult pieces. I find more than a little empathy with Paul Moorhouse's account of Albert Irvins's painting: Whereas the painter working from an external motif can refer to that object, an abstract painter has nothing go by, nothing to direct his actions. His engagement is with the developing image only. As a result every mark is fraught with danger - the painting could go wrong with every addition.
