Delves

Collage  135x185mm

This is a re-working of a painting - Watersmeet - I did more than twenty five years ago. It is an image I have come back to several times using different media. This time it was collage.

The original painting was one of the first landscape paintings I did that was in a style I felt happy with. It was on a summer school held by Ray Garvey. Noel Delves was painting his own version a few yards from me, which I bought from him later.  Ray subsequently bought a house in Provence and Noel and I stayed there at different times, to paint and to help renovate the house. Sadly Noel died in 2000 and Ray in 2001.  I can't think of a painting I would rather have exhibited in the Royal Academy. Delves sounds a little formal, but Noel would have made people wonder what on earth it had to do with Christmas,
